Curriculum

The SACSA Framework [South Australian Curriculum, Standards and Accountability] has been developed in the spirit of the National goals for schooling in the twenty-first century. It seeks to foster the holistic development of learners by providing a coherent Birth to Year 12 framework, which is designed to support the progress of learners across the phases of their learning.

The curriculum includes: Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Society and Environment, Science, Health and Physical Education, the Arts and Languages other than English [LOTE].

Reporting to Parents
Parents are encouraged to discuss their child’s progress with the class throughout the school year. Reporting to parents is both oral and written; a formal interview program is implemented irrespective of incidental parent/teacher discussions. This formal interview occurs during Term 2. Portfolios (work samples) are sent home at least once a term. At the end of the year a Summary of Learning in sent home, when either the teacher or the parent may request interviews.

Religious Education
The aim of the Religious Education Program in OLHC School is to help children develop a conscious loving relationship with God, Our Father, in Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit.

It is hoped to achieve this aim through fostering in the child:

  • An awareness of self as a unique person created and loved by God.
  • An awareness of others in relationship to self and God. The children are encouraged in attitudes of love, honesty, respect and truthfulness as they grow in relationship with others.
  • An awareness of the world where God shows his love. The children are encouraged to have respect for created things and to show care and concern for the environment.
  • An awareness of the Faith Community - how it lives and what is its message. The children are helped to celebrate their Christian faith identity by participating in Liturgies of the Word once a week to pray together. Classes, in turn, prepare the Liturgies. At other times, each class has its own liturgy or combines with other year levels to celebrate special times in the year, e.g. Easter, Mothers’ Day, Christmas, etc. The children are also introduced to several of the formal prayers of the Catholic Church, e.g. The Sign of the Cross, The Hail Mary and The Lord’s Prayer.
LITURGIES of the WORD and of the EUCHARIST
As we are a Catholic School, a number of religious celebrations form an integral part of our everyday school life. Children experience morning and afternoon prayer time and it is our practice that we give special thanks before we eat our lunch. Liturgies of the Word and Liturgies of the Eucharist [Masses] are held regularly during the year. Parents are invited through the class or the school Newsletter. Parents are encouraged to attend to support their children and the school.

THE SACRAMENTS
Catholic children are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation by the joint school and parish Sacramental Team, consisting of the Parish Priest, the Pastoral Associate, the Religious Education Co-ordinator, parents and class teachers.
