Special Programs

READING RECOVERY
Reading Recovery is a New Zealand based program initiated by Dame Marie Clay. It is an accelerated program aimed at students who are 6 years old and have been at school at least 4 terms, but are not reading successfully.

Students ‘at risk’ are tested using the Marie Clay Observation Tests and 4 students, deemed most ‘at risk’, are chosen to commence the program. The students embark on a 16-20 week program of individual daily half-hour lessons, planned to assist with their specific needs. Students finish when they have attained the skills necessary to be confident independent readers and writers.

ADAPTIVE EDUCATION
The Adaptive Education Program caters for students with specific learning needs, who require continual monitoring and support throughout their schooling.

The Adaptive Education teachers aim to help students overcome their difficulties by implementing an individual success driven program, in conjunction with the classroom teacher. Small groups of students with similar difficulties work with the AE teacher to revise and develop successful strategies to enable them to improve their level of literacy and numeracy.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Learning Assistance Program is a scheme that brings together students, volunteers and teaching staff as partners in students’ learning. LAP volunteers work with students on a one-to-one basis for an hour weekly, devising with the teacher, coordinator and student, a plan of activities tailored to that student’s particular needs. The success of the program is based on five simple principles. These are that LAP:
· Is always one-to-one
· Is about relationships
· Builds confidence and self-esteem
· Takes a creative approach to learning
· Promotes parent and community participation in schools.

SEASONS FOR GROWTH
Seasons for Growth is a program for children, young adults and adults, who are going through changes in their lives. Life is like the seasons, Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. It changes without warning sometimes and there is not always something we can do to prevent it.

It is run by co-ordinators that have undergone specific training through workshops. These trained co-ordinators are caring and confidential people who have the well-being and concerns of each individual child in mind.

Grief is not just about coping with death, separation or divorce, but all kinds of change in our lives. These changes could be things like: changing homes, seeing less of one’s friends, getting caught in the middle of arguments, having to make big decisions, not knowing what the future holds, facings losses or loss of self esteem. These are just a few things that can cause concerns for your children. There may be many more.

Seasons for Growth is an 8-week program. Each season is a focus for 2 weeks. Each child in the group participates and offers their own ideas to help others in the group through their tough times. It lets them know that they are not the only ones having problems dealing with whatever their grief may be. All the children in the group are treated, and treat, their peers with respect and are informed fully of confidentiality within the group when they begin the program. At the end of the 8 weeks there is a small celebration with the group.
